The Big Band Slam

The Big Band Slam is a beloved annual tradition that showcases the incredible talent of high school music students from across the Greater Toronto Area. Hosted at the legendary Rex Hotel Jazz and Blues Bar, this event is a masterclass in trumpet blasting, trombone sliding, and sax squealing excitement.

The Guest Artist This year, the bands will be joined by special guest Christian Overton, a highly sought-after trombonist, composer, and arranger in Toronto. Overton’s impressive resume includes work with everyone from jazz legends like Danilo Perez to rock bands like Sloan and even children’s entertainer Fred Penner. He will be working with the bands in advance and performing alongside them on the day of the Slam.

Participating Bands This year’s lineup features the JAZZ.FM91 Youth Big Band, the York Mills Jazz Band, and the Senator O’Connor Senior Jazz Ensemble. It’s a fantastic way to support the next generation of musicians while enjoying a set at one of Toronto’s most iconic jazz venues.
