Artist Talk: Tanya Marcuse

Art lovers and photography enthusiasts won't want to miss an exclusive artist talk with renowned photographer Tanya Marcuse at The Image Centre, located in the heart of downtown Toronto at 33 Gould Street.

Unveiling the Book of Miracles

Begun during the pandemic lockdown in 2020 against a backdrop of wildfires and social upheaval, Marcuse's three-part series *Book of Miracles* examines the increasing strangeness and instability of our contemporary world. Inspired by the 16th-century German manuscript *Augsburger Wunderzeichenbuch*, Marcuse utilizes photography, staging, fire, paint, and found materials to create ethereal, unsettling visions that sit right on the boundary between fact and fiction.

During this special lecture, Marcuse will dive deep into the project's three interconnected chapters—*Kingdom*, *Portent*, and *Emblem*—as well as her intensely physical and unusual creative process. *Portent*, the film component of the second chapter, is currently on view in the gallery on the Salah J. Bachir New Media Wall.

About the Artist

Born in the United States in 1964, Marcuse is celebrated for exploring the imperiled natural world through elaborate tableaux that trace cycles of growth, decay, and transformation. Her work is held in prestigious permanent collections worldwide, including New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. She is a Guggenheim Fellow and currently teaches in the Photography Program at Bard College.
