If you’ve ever found the traditional museum experience a bit too quiet or intimidating, the Art Gallery of Ontario has the perfect solution. 'Art Hangs' is a recurring social event designed to break down the barriers between the viewer and the art. Meeting on the last Friday of every month, these sessions are less about academic lectures and more about communal discovery.
Games and Insights
Each 'Art Hang' is a 30-minute guided session that focuses on a handful of iconic works from the AGO’s permanent collection. Instead of a standard tour, expect interactive games, playful prompts, and insights that encourage you to look at the art in a new way. It’s a fantastic way to meet new people or spend time with friends while engaging with some of the most important works in the city. The sessions are designed for all ages, making it a great option for families or solo visitors looking for a more interactive experience.
The Heart of the Gallery
The sessions meet in Walker Court, the stunning, light-filled central hub of the AGO designed by Frank Gehry. It’s the perfect starting point for a 'romp' through the galleries. Because the event takes place on a Friday evening, it coincides with the gallery’s extended hours, allowing you to explore the rest of the museum at your own pace after your session ends.
Practical Info
Art Hangs are included with general admission (which is always free for AGO members, Annual Pass holders, and anyone under 25). There are three sessions throughout the evening at 6:00 PM, 7:00 PM, and 8:00 PM. Space is limited and sign-up begins at 5:30 PM in Walker Court, so it’s a good idea to arrive early to secure your spot. Whether you’re an art history buff or someone who hasn't stepped foot in a gallery in years, Art Hangs offers a welcoming, fun, and social way to experience the AGO.
