North York's day-time Malaysian pop-up serves up comforting Nasi Lemak inside a gritty Yonge Street bar.

Tucked inside OnOff Restaurant and Bar at 5463 Yonge Street, Nanyang Kopitiam operates a clever daytime pop-up concept from Tuesday through Sunday. By day, the space transforms into a casual Malaysian coffee shop complete with a dragon mural painted across the brown walls and rustic wood-trimmed tables. Since opening in spring 2026, this spot has drawn steady crowds craving the kind of Southeast Asian comfort food that remains notoriously hard to find in Toronto. Because it doubles as a nightlife venue after hours, the interior retains a slightly beat-up, gritty edge—complete with a basement washroom that leaves much to be desired—but the kitchen's ambitions more than make up for the rough-around-the-edges atmosphere.

The menu is concise, focusing on traditional staples like Kaya toast, noodle soups, and the signature Nasi Lemak paired with fried chicken. The chicken arrives impressively crisp and well-salted with a fiery kick from the sambal, served alongside fragrant coconut rice, crunchy anchovies, peanuts, and hard-boiled eggs. Meals hover around the $20 mark and include a drink, though sticking to local expectations means watching out for a heavy onion presence in the sambal. Wash it down with a cup of sweet, creamy Kopi, keeping in mind that service runs strictly from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. before the evening bar crowd takes over.
