Walter Hall, tucked inside the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Music, hosts a truly unique chamber music experience this April. Multi-award-winning cellist Stéphane Tétreault is known for his technical precision and deep emotional resonance, but this program sees him stepping outside the traditional classical box.

An Exotic Partnership Tétreault is joined by bandoneonist Denis Plante and pianist Chloé Dumoulin for a program that explores the 'ear-tickling' possibilities of the cello and bandoneon. The repertoire is as diverse as the instrumentation, spanning from the structured brilliance of Johann Sebastian Bach to the fiery, rhythmic tangos of Astor Piazzolla. The inclusion of Plante’s own original works ensures a contemporary edge to the afternoon.

Artistic Insights For those who want to go deeper into the music, the event begins at 12:15 PM with a free pre-concert chat. This session is led by the series' new Artistic Director, Amy Hillis, providing context on the pieces and the unique challenges of blending these specific instruments.

Venue and Neighbourhood Walter Hall is a hidden gem in the University/Annex area, known for its superb acoustics. It’s an intimate setting that allows every nuance of the cello to be heard. After the concert, you’re perfectly positioned to explore the Royal Ontario Museum or take a stroll through Philosopher’s Walk. The mid-afternoon timing makes this an ideal cultural break for students, retirees, and local music lovers alike.
