For over 25 years, photographer Wayne Salmon has been documenting Carnival—not just as a vibrant spectacle, but as a deeply rooted cultural practice. 'Play Mas: A Portrait of Carnival,' presented by Gallery 1888 for the 2026 Contact Photography Festival, traces the journey of Carnival from Trinidad to Toronto, capturing the people who sustain these traditions across generations.
The Exhibition
This exhibition offers a poignant look at Carnival as a lived experience, shaped by histories of movement and diaspora. Through Salmon’s lens, you’ll see Carnival as an ongoing expression of identity, community, and continuity. It’s a powerful visual narrative that connects the Middle Passage to the present day, highlighting the resilience and joy inherent in the celebration.
