The Modern Sound Collective’s Concreamus choir is bringing a thought-provoking evening of new music to Eglinton St. George’s United Church. This concert, titled 'Power Dynamics,' features the world premiere of Francesca Hauser’s 'Parturition' and the Canadian premiere of Ted Hearne’s 'Sound from the Bench.'
What to Expect
Concreamus is Toronto’s premier youth and young adult new music choir, and they are known for their socially engaged programming. 'Sound from the Bench' is a 35-minute cantata that reacts to corporate personhood in the US, combining landmark Supreme Court cases with ventriloquism textbooks—a truly unique concept. 'Parturition' explores the transformative and often romanticized experience of childbirth through a blend of choir, piano, and electronics.
The Venue
Eglinton St. George’s United Church provides a beautiful, resonant space for this kind of choral work. Located in North Toronto, it’s a great neighbourhood to enjoy a quiet dinner before the show at one of the many restaurants along Yonge Street.
Why It Matters
This isn't your typical choir concert. By focusing on newly composed music by GTA-local composers and tackling complex political and personal themes, Concreamus is pushing the boundaries of what a choral performance can be. It’s a must-see for anyone interested in the intersection of music, politics, and the human experience.
